Making It Real
So let’s talk about Lisa, the first person we met in the waiting room. There are a lot of things going on with Lisa. She works ridiculous hours. Her life is one big stress-fest and her body doesn’t like it. Neither does she, but she doesn’t know how to get out of it. No idea. In fact, saying things like “no, I’m not going to work on Saturday” doesn’t enter her mind as a possibility. Lisa came to me thinking that she wanted to find a different job that didn’t take so much out of her. While working with her, I think the phrase I heard the most was, “that never even occurred to me.” It’s certainly the most powerful thing she has said, because it shows how disconnected she is from her imagination and curiosity. She wanted out, but couldn’t even imagine how to do it, or what else she could do.
Lisa was also one of the worst self-bullies I have ever met. It just about broke my heart, because she is also one of the most genuinely warm and caring people I have ever met. When Lisa started to stop being a bully—yes, it took a while because it was such an ingrained habit—she began to see possibilities. She opened up her curiosity, started dreaming and checking things out. Based on what she discovered, she decided to add things in to her life, and used those to begin to crowd out work. She checked out several possible career changes, and ultimately decided that she wanted to retire a few years early, and spend more time with family, giving back and volunteering. Those were her priorities. She had worked hard enough, and had enough money set aside to be able to do that—it had just never occurred to her as a possibility. Her strategy is all around how to leave her job and create her new life within the next year. It’s a very different outcome than she originally thought she could have, but it’s the one she wants.
